What to Look For in a Plus-Size Wedding Guest Dress

  • Style: While style is a completely personal choice, Busch gives a few suggestions on different options to look for in plus-size dresses. For example, she says A-line, wrap, and empire silhouettes are flattering for all body types. She adds that “Regardless of your body shape, the most important thing to remember when choosing a wedding guest dress is to wear what makes you feel confident and comfortable.”
  • Dress Code: “When the dress code reads casual, this means that anything goes,” says Busch. “Consider the couple getting married and make their best judgment on what casual means to them.” She adds that “generally speaking, a breezy summer dress is likely a safe option. When it comes to a co*cktail dress code, it's about striking a balance between elevated and casual. Says Busch: "This means dresses, skirts, and pantsuits that you reserve for special events, paired with elevated accessories such as a heel or clutch to complete the look.” Black tie weddings require the most formal attire: "think evening gowns and tuxedos,” says Busch. “I suggest paying attention to the fabrics, as items made from silk, velvet, chiffon, crepe, or sequin will offer a more formal look.” Busch also recommends longer dresses for more formal events. And for destination weddings, she likes to "lean into the vibe of the venue." For example, if you’re attending a tropical beach destination wedding, wear bright colors and florals to highlight the environment.

FAQ

  • What dress styles are best for curvier bodies?

“When it comes to choosing a wedding guest dress for curvier body types, certain silhouettes can be particularly flattering depending on your preference and style,” explains Busch.“One I often suggest to clients is an A-line dress, because it gently hugs the waist and gracefully drapes over the hips and legs, resulting in a well-proportioned and flattering look.”

Empire waist dresses have a high waistline that falls just below the bust,” she adds. “This style often features feminine details like puff sleeves and flows loosely over the rest of the body, making it a comfortable and flattering option for curvier body types.”

Lastly, she suggests wrap dresses due to their “universally appealing,” shape. “You’ll typically find this style with a V-neckline and wrap-around design that embraces the waist and this silhouette accentuates curves while cinching the waist without feeling restrictive.”

  • Where can I buy a plus-size wedding guest dress?

Some of our favorite websites that specialize in plus-size clothing options are Insyze and Never Fully Dressed. While other websites such as ASOS, Anthropologie, Stitch Fix, and more, also have a wide selection of plus-size dresses for a variety of occasions.

  • What colors should guests avoid wearing to a wedding?

Although not all brides choose to wear white, it's a good rule of thumb for guests to avoid wearing anything white, cream, or ivory. Black-tie affairs and winter weddings often call for darker ensembles, such as deep hues like black or navy blue. Spring and summer weddings offer ample opportunity to play with colors and patterns, especially if the ceremony and reception are held outdoors. Consider pastel shades, floral prints, and bright colors.
