OUT THE BOX

Can Amazon help solve the homelessness crisis?

  • Brandon Cruz, News Reporter

A STUNNING 13 million people tuned in to watch a YouTuber unbox a $20,000 tiny home and they were delighted by the ease of construction.

The streamer showed his followers what a $20,000 investment in an Amazon tiny home will get you as Americans continue to face an affordable housing crisis.

In particular, many young adults fear the dream of owning a home may be dead for them.

Since the start of the pandemic, housing prices have shot up in record numbers, almost doubling the cost of homes in some areas throughout the country.

For example, the median price for an existing home in March 2020 was roughly $280,700, almost half of April 2024's new median cost of $407,600, according to data from Bankrate.

This surge is an over 95% jump in price.

This means in order to purchase a home in 2024, a buyer would need to make roughly $150,000 per year, have over $50,000 on hand for a down payment, and be responsible for less than $1,000 in monthly debt payments.

But these requirements are out of touch for most Americans now.

In fact, the average salary throughout the nation is only $59,000, with only 37% of Americans making $100,000 or more, according to Statista.

On top of this, the average person is carrying almost $6,000 in debt, the highest it has been in over 10 years, according to a 2023 report byTransUnion.

AMAZON TINY HOME

But now Amazon may have an affordable housing solution that might be this generation's only hope of homeownership.

I decided to DIY a tiny home after my wife died - now I pay $25 a month to rent plot and live cheap on Social Security

The mega-retailer is now in the housing business as they are selling prefabricated mobile homes for significantly less than regular houses on the market.

These 19 by 20-foot spaces come equipped with a built-in bathroom, shower, living room, bedroom, and kitchen, but does require an electrician to come by and hook up all the standard wiring.

And for $20,000, Amazon customers can have one literally shipped to them to put together themselves.

YouTuber Unspeakable recently purchased one of these homes and videos of him unboxing it have racked up 13 million views on YouTube and Twitter.

He can be seen pretty much unfolding and connecting the house together, then putting it through a series of tests, such as simulating wind storms and even dropping a tree on it to test the durability of the home.

"I give it five stars," he said in the video after the house withstands all his tests.

Reactions to the home varied widely online, with some supporting Amazon's efforts, and others upset at this being what their generation can afford.

One user on X, formerly Twitter, said, "this is just about the only house I will ever be able to afford."

"The way this country's Housing Market is going to Hell…this might be an option," wrote another, calling the deal "tempting."

Others even suggested this could be a realistic and affordable way of addressing this country's homelessness crisis.

"This is how I know homelessness can be eliminated fairly easily," said one user.

States like New York and California, which have the largest population of unhoused people in the US, would need roughly $8.1 billion annually for the next 12 years to solve the problem, according to a study reported in Bloomberg.

This is less than 1% of the U.S. government's federal budget or about 4% of Jeff Bezos, Amazon's CEO's, total net worth.
