This is the easiest cheese and onion pie you can make. So simple and so tasty and completely delicious.

Our old school cheese and onion pie makes a delicious summery easy meal and great for taking along as picnic food on a day out.

Just slice and serve with a huge bowl of salad, chutney and maybe some creamy potato salad as a little extra. Or on cold days it goes great with a scoop of mashed potatoes and some baked beans.

Making Homemade Cheese And Onion Pie Is A Good Thing, Here’s Why!

Super easy!– Grab yourself a roll of store-bought puff pastry to make this tasty savoury pie. It’s super easy to make, just wrap the pastry around your home-cooked cheesy potato filling brush with egg wash and bake! You won’t need a pie dish or pie tin.

You can use your favourite cheese– you don’t need to stick to a good old mature cheddar cheese for this pie, you can throw in whatever cheese you like, or even a combination of different cheeses.

You can add in extras!– Because you’re making the pie yourself, you can add in any extra ingredients you fancy. Or add a little extra kick with some cayenne pepper, or English mustard powder.

How To Make Cheese & Onion Pie

Step One – cook the potato cubes ready to make the cheese pie filling

  • Place the diced potato cubes into cold water with a pinch of salt, then bring to the boil. Then reduce the heat and cook with the lid on for around 4-5 minutes or until just tender.
  • Drain the potatoes and put them to one side for a few minutes until ready to add them to the cheese pie filling.

Step Two – fry the onions ready to go into the cheese and onion pie filling

  • Add the olive oil to a frying pan and gently fry the onions, chopped garlic and rosemary for around 6-7 minutes or until softened.
  • Then tip the potatoes into the mixture and stir to combine.

Step Three – preheat the oven

  • Heat the oven to 200C / 400F / Gas Mark 6. You can grab our super handy oven temperature conversion chart printable here.

Step Four – put together the cheese and onion pie

  • Lay a sheet of greaseproof paper onto the baking sheet. If your pastry is a little sticky, sprinkle a little flour onto the paper before adding the pastry sheet.
  • Unroll the pastry sheet and lay it onto the greaseproof paper. Because you’re using ready rolled – you shouldn’t need a rolling pin.
  • Use a sharp knife to make diagonal cuts into the pastry – leaving a good sized space down the centre of the pastry sheet for the pie filling to go.
  • Sprinkle half the grated cheese onto the middle section of the pastry sheet, then top with the potato and onion mixture and finish with the rest of the grated cheese.
  • Brush the pastry with beaten egg and then bring the pastry strips over the mixture to make criss cross effect, tucking under the ends to seal them and stop the filling escaping.

Step Five – bake the cheese and onion pie in the oven

  • Brush the whole pie with beaten egg (you can add a sprinkling of black pepper or even some parmesan cheese on top of the pie crust) and bake in the oven for around 25 – 30 minutes until golden brown.

  • Want a creamy filling? Add a good slosh of double cream to the potatoes and cheese filling mixture.
  • Add some bacon – add in some cooked strips of bacon to the cheese pie filling.
  • Want more veggies – stir in some cooked beans (I quite like baked beans in this pie)
