A Big Hero 6 party, with activity ideas, recipes, and viewing fun!

How many of you are excited for Big Hero 6 movie to be out? I seriously loved the movie.

We went and saw it in the theaters. I did not have high hopes. Movies for kids these days are usually cheesy, feel good, and really, really lame. But this one…wow! The values it teaches, the messages it conveys about family, love, friendship, creativity, exploration, sacrifice, and hard work had me wanting to clap at the end. If you know me…you know how huge that is. Clapping at movies…total pet peeve of mine. (Uh hello, this is not live, the actors are not here. Why the crap are you clapping? Rant over).

Anyway, I went straight to Walmart and picked up the exclusive 2 DISC Disc BD+DVD=DC+WM GWP 2 pk. Which came with the gift of digital copy (while supplies last). Then, I planned a viewing party. I let my kids invite some friends and cousins, and I planned a fun menu, a few awesome activities and competitions, complete with prizes (merchandise and toys) I purchased on Walmart.com, and of course watching the movie!

Since food is my favorite, let’s start with the menu:

I based my menu selection off the colorful and whimsical characters of San Fransokyo, and played on their names to try and create a kid friendly menu that was also really fun. One of the things I enjoyed about the movie was the invention side. Kids stretching their creativity to invent and create. So I decided to make the menu a “Build-Your-Own” theme. Each menu item includes ways for the kids to “build” and customize it themselves.

Here’s a run down of what the options included:

Neatnik Wasabi Crunch Mix

I offered several options for kids to make their own trail mix, with pretzels, puffs, wasabi peas, air popper popcorn, raisins, etc. Each kid got a paper bag, and got to make their snack mix for during the movie.

Hiro Heros

I offered hero rolls, lunch meats, cheese, and toppers. The kids got to customize their sandwiches how they wanted.

Honey Lemon-ade

This lemonade is pretty tasty. I found the recipe on Pure Ella. It is sweetened it with honey, and uses fresh lemons. So I made the lemonade, then gave the kids the option to add to it with berries, fruits, and mint. I loved it. My kids thought the honey aspect was strange, so we also offered some lemonade from soda cans, which kids love!

Fanboy Fred Fries

I cooked frozen tater gems and fries, and then let the kids mix their own dipping sauce, though most used plain old ketchup! I made “fry sauce” a Utah favorite that is a mixture of ketchup and mayo, and sometimes a touch of horseradish!

Go Go Tomago Salad

This pasta salad was not exactly the most kid friendly of recipes, but the kids really got into adding stuff into it, and I loved having some more grown up food for the adults that stayed at the party. It had a light balsamic dressing which really made it pop!

Baymax Brownies

Fudgy brownies with whipped cream frosting. These are my all time favorite brownies. I just made a tray, and ran out of time. But you could always use cookie cutters to shape them like Baymax or something from the movie.

Additionally, I offered a few fun activities for the kids. Their favorite was the Build Your Own Baymax, where I provided Snowballs (I am not sure if I have ever eaten one, but they were the perfect shape and color for our Baymax!), some powdered sugar donuts, chocolate chips, and marshmallows. The kids used either frosting or toothpicks to put their Baymax together!

I loved seeing their creative side come out and shine! It is amazing how kids can take the same ingredients and make such different creations.

We also had an invention contest, just like the movie. I gave the kids bins of things like straws, paperclips, legos, foam blocks, pens, papers, and the like, and let them invent. They had to conceptualize an invention, draw it out, build a “model” and then explain it to the judges.

Hands down my favorite part of the party! I am totally determined to do this more often at home with my kids. It is too easy to let them just watch television, play electronics, or go outside (none of which is really all that bad), rather than having them explore, create, and imagine. I loved it! We told the kids to think of a problem they have and invent something to solve it. The kid who won said he hates cleaning his room and loves playing video games, so he “invented” a video game controller that controls a robot arm which would clean his room for him. Such a fun idea!

And the kids loved the prize! It was a Disney Infinity Baymax figurine, I bought on Walmart.com. It served two purposes. I used it to help decorate our food table, then gave it as the prize at the end of the party! I also picked up some cute Baymax luggage to hold the blocks and supplies for our invention table!

Anyway, that was our party, and you guys it was a total blast. So I totally recommend heading to Walmart and buying the exclusive set offered there. The purchase of the Big Hero 6 Blu-Ray/DVD + Gift With Purchase Set includes a digital movie on Vudu (while supplies last). You just have to scan your receipt using the Savings Catcher in the Walmart app. Then look for a message on your phone or email. Once you’ve done that you can watchBig Hero 6on any device! Pretty sweet!
